Developing an irrigation scheme to increase rice production by 33% and improve food security

The area east of Jinja near the source of the Nile River has been hit hard by economic and climate stress. The Government of Uganda has prioritized rice production, to help build sustainable livelihoods and enhance food security in the area. As part of this effort, the Government plans to expand access and use of water for agricultural production through the construction of an irrigation project to regulate the flow of the river and provide farmers with reliable water to irrigate their land and produce rice crops. Financing the major infrastructure project was dependent on detailed designs and technical studies to make the project viable.

We provided consultancy services to the project executor, SGI, to determine the design of the irrigation project infrastructure. The services included climate forecasting, water resources assessment, design engineering, and master planning.

The project includes two 12-meter-tall dams, two reservoirs with capacity of 30 MCM, serving an area of 4,400 hectares through a network of canals and drainage channels. The irrigation system will generate water for 200,000 people and enable rice production.

Services Provided

Climate forecasting and proofing

Our experts conducted rainfall analysis, reviewed the weather monitoring network and forecasted the effects of 50-years of climate change on the project area.

Water resources assessment and modeling

Our hydrology team assessed long-term water availability and demand, constructing a hydrological model to support the design of the dams and reservoirs.  This enabled us to develop options for irrigation and river damming infrastructure that would optimize the available water.

Dam and reservoir engineering

Our hydraulic engineering team supported dam and reservoir design with dam break analysis, sediment regime and transport analysis and developed a model to evaluate annual sediment yield in the reservoir areas.  We also developed Dam Safety Plans and Infrastructure O&M plans.

Irrigation planning

The Hydro Nova team was in charge of developing the irrigation scheme layout component of the project Master Plan, which specified the areas that could be developed for irrigated agriculture.

Irrigation system infrastructure design

Our engineers designed the main components related to canals, drains, other required structures and prepared detailed designs for the dams and irrigation schemes.
