Updating northern Somali cities’ water supply and sanitation system with master planning
Population growth, rising water demand and inadequate service facilities have placed increasing pressure on existing water infrastructure of the main urban cities of Puntland and Somaliland in northern Somalia. The World Bank retained Hydro Nova to design updated plans for expanding the water service systems of seven cities: Bosaso, Garowe, Galkayo, Boroma, Berbera, Burco and Ceerigaabo.
Through our master planning investigation techniques, we developed a US $9.2 million investment plan, including improvements and expansion to municipal water capture, delivery and treatment networks. Once projects are completed, the seven cities will achieve complete water supply coverage and bring reliable water and sanitation services to over 2.2 million people.

We worked with local water authorities to develop criteria and a process for prioritizing investments and develop a list of project options.
Feasibility study
We conducted a detailed feasibility assessment of investment needs in each town and tested the impact of alternative investment options on cooperation, competition and conflict.
