Launching a New Project to Update Iraq’s National Water Strategy
28 August 2024 – Baghdad

Baghdad, 28 August — Hydro Nova, in collaboration with the Government of Iraq, announced the launch of the project to Update the National Water Strategy of 2015 (known as “SWLRI”). The Strategy of 2015, which was also carried out by the team at Hydro Nova, was a multi-sectoral, multi-phase, 20-year plan to secure the country’s water future by addressing its critical water challenges.
The Strategy, although still valid, needs to be revised to consider the lack of investment in the past ten years and changes to reality on the ground. According to Hydro Nova director, Andrea Cattarossi, “The impacts of climate change, the completion of the Ilisu Dam on the Tigris River in Turkey and others are all significant changes that must be accounted for in the update.” The updated National Water Strategy, which is expected to be launched by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2028, will focus on several key areas including sustainable water management, infrastructure investment, and equitable and balanced water allocations.
