Mapping and planning services to improve access to safe water and basic sanitation

Seeking to expand access to improved water sources and sanitation, the west African nation of the Gambia wanted to understand the status of WASH facilities (public water taps, latrines, and water sources) and a have the means to increase services in the underserved communities.  But surveying WASH facilities is challenging because of the remote and scattered location of the area.

The Government of Gambia commissioned a team led by Hydro Nova to conduct a nationwide survey of communities and WASH facilities and establish a web-based tool for monitoring and data management. Our survey helped Government and WASH sector partners understand what communities have adequate facilities and how to target underserved communities with new and improved facilities. Today, the Gambian Government operates and manages the WASH Map tool to monitor the status of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities across the nation and plan where to install new facilities.
