Port Sudan Water Supply Improvement Project

Climate-proofing critical water supply infrastructure

  • Location: Port Sudan, Sudan
  • Date: 2018 – 2020
  • Client: World Bank
  • Project Type: Water supply engineering

Planning and engineering services to build water supply resilience

The coastal city of Port Sudan relies on the Khor Arbaat basin for its potable water. But in recent years, more severe floods, drought and erosion have crippled the city’s critical water facilities, causing diminished production and failures. City managers needed to know how to upgrade the aged and climate-vulnerable water infrastructure and protect the city against natural hazards.

The World Bank engaged Hydro Nova to provide planning and engineering services for an overhaul of the water production system at Port Sudan and improve overall reliability and climate resilience.

The team studied how natural hazards affect critical sites and designed optimal improvements to the city’s main wellfield, dam and reservoir. The $5.7 million package will increase water reliability for the city’s 700,000 residents, bringing facilities back into service and shoring up local resilience.

Services Provided

Hazard prediction

We combined watershed and climate analysis with flood, drought and erosion simulation to predict a complete picture of hazard risk to critical assets in Port Sudan.

Wellfield improvement and expansion

We simulated and designed a proposed system of 8 new wells and subsurface dam that provided the Arbaat wellfield a more drought-proof production of 2.1 MCM per year.

Dam and reservoir retrofitting

Our engineers fast-tracked analysis and guidelines to improve the storage and outflow of Arbaat Dam and reservoir for a more reliable and flood-proof loading of 7 MCM per year.

Municipal water supply solutions

We built local operational capacity with training and tools for successful well drilling and erosion control.
