Water Supply Infrastructure for Agropastoral Communities in Northern Somalia
Complete water harvesting system engineering and supervision services in water-scarce areas
- Location: Somaliland and Puntland, Somalia
- Date: 2016 – 2018
- Client: World Bank
- Project Type: Water supply engineering
Delivering community-changing water supply systems in Somalia’s challenging climate
Regional governments of northern Somalia sought to improve access to water for rural communities and their crops and livestock who faced increasing water insecurity due to the changing climate. The World Bank retained Hydro Nova as consulting engineer to site, design and supervise the build of eight rainwater harvesting structures that would extend water security for people, crops and their animals through the dry season.
This project will increase water supply by nearly 1.2 million cubic meters, enough to sustain the needs of over 50,000 rural Somalis and their livestock during the driest months of the year.
Services Provided
Site selection
Our support for local government included defining site selection parameters and training on the GIS- based Wadi Evaluation Tool (WET) for identifying water harvesting dams.
Water supply infrastructure design
For selected sites in Puntland and Somaliland, we conducted field surveys and prepared detailed designs and tender documents for a range of water harvesting structures.
Construction supervision
We supervised the construction of eight water supply systems that today serve thousands of people during the driest months of the year.
Impact assessment
Our monitoring provided baseline and impact assessment valuable for scaling up and replicating.
